"Lesson Guidelines"

SAFETY GUIDELINES These guidelines are intended for educational purposes only. intended as a basis for evidence of legal responsibility or negligence in any legal action. T ASK's suggested guidelines are commercial tours, rentals and lessons and it is recognized that each area and each situation calls for different responses and implies no limitations on solutions the operator may choose.

LESSONS

The following guidelines are designed for companies or individuals wishing to offer courses following the TAPS guidelines.

INTRODUCTORY - designed to introduce the pleasures and safety considerations of sea kayaking.

    1. Class:

  • Introduction:
  • - singles, doubles
  • - where to paddle
  • - basic equipment
  • - buoyancy
  • - clothing

Safety:

  • - safe paddling theory, gear and back-ups
  • - judgment
  • - back-up systems
  • - developin g paddle and rescue skills
  • - signaling devices

Hazards:

  • - hypothermia/hypothermia (tropics)
  • - local problem areas
  • - weather
  • - rescue theory
  • - safety devices

2. On the Water:

  • - carry ing a kayak by hand, trailer or car rack
  • - paddling strokes, turns, low brace
  • - rafting up (real conditions)
  • - entering and exiting the kayak
  • - "rules of the road"

(4 -6 hours is recommended as a suitable time to cover the abov e to an appropriate depth.)

BASIC - designed to provide the basic skills and knowledge for safe sea kayaking. Previous experience is not essential.

1. Class: Introduction:

  • - singles, doubles
  • - basic equipment
  • - buoyancy
  • - boat care
  • - rigging
  • - clothing

Safety:

  • - self responsibility, group responsibility
  • - safety equipment
  • - hazards
  • - clothing for cold water/hot weather

Rescue:< UL>

  • - theory of group and self rescues (Note: an emphasis on self rescue techniques in no way implies endorsement of solo paddling)

    Navigation:

    • - charts, tide and current tables
    • - compass dead reckoning
    • - aids to nav igation

    Weather:

    • - wind, fog, hot and cold temperatures, storms and squalls

    Oceanography:

    • - beaches, headlands, shoals, reefs
    • - turbulent water conditions (wind against tide/current)

    Trip Planning:

    • - food
    • - packing
    • - waterproofing gear
    • - camping skills and etiquette
    • - scheduling, contingency plans and alternatives
    • - navigational planning
    • - kayak transportation and care

    2. Pool: Wet < /B>exit

    • - paddle strokes, turns, braces
    • - self rescues
    • - group rescues: applications & limitations
    • demonstrate Eskimo roll

    3. On the Water:

    • - safe group travel
    • - landing and launching (bas ic and waves)
    • - managing waves and wind
    • - practical navigation

    • Strongly recommended: cold water wet exit and rescue.

    Specialty clinics:

    • - Eskimo roll
    • - Rescues
    • - Paddling in currents
    • - Surf
    • - N avigation
    • - Coastal survival

    NOTE: It is assumed that instructors will be competent sea kayakers with appropriate knowledge and experience.
